VOLUME VII: The Sable Book of Borrowed Faces

“You can become anyone. Their voice, their smile, their regrets. But you’ll forget your own.”

Overview

Category: Identity Sorcery, Flesh Masking, Persona Theft, Echo-Memory Ritualism

Tone: Haunting, surgical, tragic. This book doesn’t just transform you—it replaces you. Every spell in this tome erodes the self while building an illusion. By the final page, your reflection might look back at you—but with someone else’s eyes.

Material: Bound in stretched and dried faces—thin as silk, with eyes sewn shut. The pages shimmer like skin touched by fire. A soft moaning sound emerges when the book is opened too quickly, as if dozens of stolen identities are weeping in the dark.

Origin:

Written by Mistress Nevara of the Hollow Masquerade, a warlock who infiltrated twenty courts in twenty faces, slaughtering entire bloodlines while pretending to be kin. She was last seen as a child, then a widow, then a corpse—all on the same day. Her true face? No one knows. Her soul is trapped in the final page of this book, screaming when you read it aloud.

Structure & Chapter Breakdown

Chapter I: The Mirror’s Lie

Subject: Identity illusions, minor mimicry, early deception spells

Themes:

Surface lies

Voice-stealing

Skin that shifts

Spells:

Whispercloak

Borrow someone’s voice for one hour. You must hear them speak at least three full sentences first.

Flesh Echo

Your skin flickers to resemble someone else’s face for up to five minutes. The illusion fails if touched by someone who loves the person you’re copying.

Lipstitch Sigil

Seal your mouth with black thread and inscribe a face on your palm. You may speak only as that person until dawn.

Ritual:

The Silken Reflection

Submerge your face in black water under moonlight. Whisper your target’s name until breath fails. If done correctly, their reflection will replace yours for one day, and they will momentarily forget their name.

Chapter II: Memory Theft and Persona Carving

Subject: Extracting identity, draining memories, and absorbing mannerisms

Themes:

Living memory as resource

The art of forgetting yourself

Mannerism mimicry

Spells:

Gesticular Theft

Steal a person’s physical ticks and habits. You begin to move as they do, fooling even those closest to them.

Echo Bile

Vomit a memory stolen from another. If someone swallows it, they will believe they lived it.

Mindsheen Inversion

Switch one memory with a victim: they remember you as themselves, and you as them.

Ritual:

The Drape of False Mourning

Wear the funeral garments of someone recently deceased. Sleep on their grave with a candle lit by their kin. Awaken with fragments of their personality sewn into your mind. But each night you sleep thereafter, you lose something of your own.

Chapter III: Mask-Grafting & Flesh Shaping

Subject: Physical transformation, magical disguise, surgically binding false faces

Themes:

Pain for perfection

Becoming more than one

The face as currency

Spells:

Sutureform

Temporarily stitch someone’s face over your own. Lasts one hour. The original owner must be alive and within ten miles.

Bone Marquetry

Reshape your skeletal structure to match another. Takes one hour and causes screaming-level pain.

Face in the Jar

Store a peeled face in a preservation fluid. You may wear it once for up to one day. Afterward, it melts, and the person you stole it from awakens with yours.

Ritual:

The True Lie Stitching

Skin a face from a living liar. Weave it into a falsehood spoken aloud. If accepted by a crowd of ten or more, the face becomes a permanent mask you can wear at will—but you will begin to forget the truth of your past.

Chapter IV: Becoming the Ghost of Another

Subject: Full persona replacement, life infiltration, soul echoing

Themes:

You no longer act—you are

Haunting the living by being them

Personality erosion

Spells:

Hollow Imitation

Cast this to assume the role of someone fully. Their friends, family, and even magical familiars believe you are them for three days. You cannot speak of magic, or your cover collapses instantly.

The Mourning Mirror

Trap a soul’s echo in a looking glass. When anyone looks into it, they see the trapped person. Break the mirror to set it free—or to banish them forever.

Life Substitution Curse

Sacrifice a memory to erase your target from one person’s life. You take their place in memory, but your mind fractures with each use.

Ritual:

The Mask That Screams When You Sleep

Create a mask of beeswax molded from a corpse’s still-warm face. Sleep while wearing it for seven nights. When you awaken, the dead person’s soul clings to your dreams—and over time, replaces them.

Chapter V: The Final Disguise — Becoming Nobody

Subject: Erasing your own self, becoming untouchable, losing all identity

Themes:

Freedom through obliteration

No name = no fate

To vanish is to rule the shadows

Spells:

Null Identity Seal

Remove your own name, birthplace, and voice from all records, magical and mortal. Even fate cannot track you.

Veil of the Forgotten

For seven hours, no one can recall you unless they see you. Once you leave their sight, their memory resets.

Unbirth Wound

Reverse the moment of your magical origin. You cease to be a caster, but also cease to be hunted. You become pure shadow.

Ritual:

The Rite of the Shattered Mirror

Smash 13 mirrors each reflecting a face you’ve worn. Burn them with your true name spoken backward and forgotten. If done correctly, you become a walking cipher—unseen by gods, magic, and history. But each day, you lose a truth about yourself, until you are a stranger in your mind.

Final Page (stitched in human hair):

“You became her. Then him. Then a god. Then a shadow.

But in the end, no one came looking for you.

Because you forgot to matter.”
